Why does Mayweather keep himself in shape? Leonard Ellerbe knows the answer

With the exception of a fight with MMA star Conor McGregor in August 2017, Floyd Mayweather has not performed since September 2015, when he defended the world Welterweight title, beating Andre Berto on points.

However, rumors about the return of the 43-year-old star still arise. How real are they? BoxingScene tried to find out from his closest friend and business partner, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe.

“Boxing is his main love. It’s the best thing he can do, and he likes being in the audience. He wants to be a great coach, and when he sets his mind to something, he gets it. He is in the gym, he is giving himself to work and polishing his coaching skills, ” Ellerbe said.

“Floyd keeps himself in shape and is very conscious about how he looks. He has always been disciplined and is proud of his lifestyle. His body is still in perfect order, — says Leonard. — Floyd does not just carry the title of “Best in history” (TBE — the Best Ever, approx. vRINGe). His performances are not missed, people do not have enough of it. That’s why there’s so much talk of his return. People do not have enough mega-events involving Mayweather, when he beats anyone who would not be put against him. They lack the spectacle and the pain against it.”

According to Ellerbe, if Mayweather still decides to return, he will not keep it a secret: “If Floyd decides that Pacquiao or McGregor can get a rematch, he will announce it to the world. Now he remains retired, but if he changes his mind and wants to do something different, he will let us know.”

Lomachenko-Lopez in September without an audience: Bob Arum’s plan

As soon as air traffic between Ukraine and the United States is resumed, the head of Top Rank Bob Arum will try to ensure the fastest flight of the WBC/WBO/WBA lightweight world champion Vasyl Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KO), so that two or three months after this, finally arrange a fight for “absolute” with IBF champion Teofimo Lopez (15-0, 12 KO).

The organizer hopes that the fight will take place in September.

“Lopez and his management are constantly calling me, saying they are ready,” the functionary complained on the Ringside Reporter Live podcast. — We don’t plan any intermediate fights for the guys. Immediately the Loma–Lopez fight is in the States, and it may very well happen that we will do it without an audience. We want to arrange everything as soon as possible.”

Therefore, Arum says, the fighters “will have to adapt” and work harder to raise the purchase of TV broadcasts on the PPV system. That is, as the head of Top Rank hints, Lomachenko should be connected to the verbal promotion of the show.

“We will do everything and, hopefully, until September, if we can bring Lomachenko here with his father and the rest of the team,” Robert concluded.
